What is a DOCX File Type?
The Microsoft Word Open XML document was introduced with the release of Microsoft Word 2007. DOCX files have become one of the most common file types for saving text documents since the introduction of the format.
With the release of Word 2007, .DOC files were replaced by DOCX files as the standard file for saving documents in Word. Unlike DOC files, which store the data in one binary file, DOCX files are saved in Open XML format, which stores the data as separate files and folders in a compressed Zip package. There are XML files and three folders, docProps, Word and _ rels, which contain the properties of the document, the content and the relationships between the files.
The Open XML is designed to make the contents of documents more open and accessible. For example, the text of the document is saved in text files and the images stored as individual image files, such as .JPG or .PNG, in the DOCX file. The files may also include page formatting information, data about the author and notes; document review.
Important: To explore the contents of a DOCX file, rename the files; extension .docx to .zip, then decompress the resulting file with' any Zip decompression utility.
