What is a BIT File Type?

The MP3 format was released in 1993 by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and l' extension of .bit was initially assigned to audio MP3 files. In 1995, however, researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) changed their apos; extension to .mp3 when they launched their d'technology; MP3 encoding, and so on. Fraunhofer IIS then released WinPlay3 for Windows in September 1995, allowing users to encode and read MP3 files.

The MP3 format quickly became the standard format for storing music since it could compress the audio to a fraction of the size of the other common audio formats of the epoch, such as .WAV and .AIF files, without significant loss of quality. This was particularly important due to the limited storage space offered by the hard drives; computer at the time.

Since the .bit extension was used before the MP3 format was widely adopted, it is very likely that you will never encounter a BIT audio file. If you encounter a BIT file, however, you can play it with an audio player that supports the MP3 format, such as Microsoft Windows Media Player, Apple iTunes or VideoLAN VLC media player.

If you cannot open a TIF file with an audio player that supports the MP3 format, you may need to manually modify l' extension of the .bit file to .mp3.
