What is a WAV File Type?
The WAVE format is based on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) which is a container format mainly used for recording videos and sound. In the early 1990s, Microsoft and IBM jointly developed the WAVE format by adopting WAV files as the primary option for saving uncompressed raw audio files in Microsoft Windows.
WAV files are similar to .AIF files, recorded in the Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) and more common on Macintosh systems. WAV files, however, are more often saved and read on Windows computers than on Macs.
On Windows, MacOS and Linux systems there are many programs that support WAV files. Some include bundled programs such as Microsoft Windows Media Player and Apple iTunes, and applications such as VideoLAN VLC and Eltima Elmedia Player.
