What is a DMG File Type?
Software developers today generally build and distribute applications for Mac users in DMG, .APP or .PKG files. DMG files are particularly common because their contents can be checked during installation to ensure that they have not been tampered with and can also be compressed to reduce the size of the installer.
When downloading a DMG file, a Mac user can simply double-click-on it for the' open with the' DiskImageMounter utility provided with MacOS. When the DMG file is opened it mounts a virtual disk on the desktop and in an Apple Finder window as s' it s' acted d' a CD or d' a USB key that comes from apos; be inserted into the computer.
In the Finder window, the Mac user can double-click on the program icon, which is an APP file, to run the' application. The Mac user can also drag the program icon to the file; Applications "L' icon from the folder to the file; Applications" directory in MacOS.
After installation of the stored software in the DMG file, the DMG file is no longer needed. DMG files can therefore be deleted after the installation of the software.
While the DMG files are Mac specific and not intended for use on Windows, there are several Windows programs that can extract content or convert it to d' other formats. Some include 7-Zip, PeaZip and DMG2IMG.
The DMG replaces the .IMG file format, which was previously used in Mac OS Classic.
