What is a PKG File Type?
Only if you develop a Symbian OS application will you likely encounter PKG Symbian files. The PKG file needs to be defined by Symbian developers to build a single file distributed d'installer. When the application is ready to be built, typically developers use the " makeis &" command, which is part of the CreateSIS utility. They can also use the Sisar or Easy SIS Creator applications, which provide a graphical interface for building SIS files.
Since PKG files are saved in plain text, they can be edited and opened with a text editor, such as Microsoft Notepad or Apple TextEdit, which are bundled with Windows and MacOS. If the PKG file cannot be opened with a text editor, you probably have a different type of PKG file. This is due to different file types using .pkg extension, which includes MacOS Installer Package and PlayStation Store Download Package.
While the SIS files are being used to install applications you can unzip the files if you want to see their contents. You can use the free UnSIS tool to decompress SIS files.
The Symbian s'Foundation was completed in 2010 and the Symbian operating system was abandoned. Nokia finally stopped accepting software from developers in 2014.
