What is a USDZ File Type?
The US$Z format was introduced in 2018 to solve the delivery problems of files saved in the US$ Universal Scene Description format, a format developed by Pixar Animation Studios to streamline their 3D graphical pipeline. The US$ files include different layers, which consist of different source files on which collaborating artists can work destructively individually and combine them to form a single scene. These layers can be defined, packaged, assembled and edited by various 3D applications used in the Pixar 3D pipeline.
Because layers are made up of various 3D assets in USD format, it is difficult to consider a 3D USD object or scene as a single object. Pixar has therefore worked with Apple to develop the USDZ format as a more distributable version of the USD format.
The US$Z files are packaged as Zip archives but are not compressed or encrypted. The USDZ format simply packages the USDA, USDA, or USD file, which stores the information on the 3D object or scene, as well as all PNG, JPEG, M4A, MP3 and WAV assets.
If you are a developer creating 3D objects or scenes for a website or application, you will most likely encounter a USDZ file. You can also download a USDZ 3D template online or receive a USDZ file via e@-@mail. One common use is to allow users to view 3D objects in augmented real time (AR) format. An online furniture store, for example, could publish a 3D model of d' a couch in USDZ format qu' a user can see in his or her living room to see what it would look like in his or her space.
Both iPhones and iPads running on iOS 12 or higher support USDZ files using the Quick Look tool. Various mobile applications such as Safari and Messages, bundled with iOS and iPadOS, are delivered with the AR Quick Look function.
There are several programs available for macOS, iOS and iPadOS that also support the USDZ format. Apple Preview, which comes with MacOS, opens and displays USDZ files. Reality Composer is another application developed by Apple that allows to view, edit, save and convert USDZ files to d' other formats. Available for iOS and iPadOS and comes with Apple Xcode 11 for MacOS.
Reality Converter was also introduced by Apple in January 2020. This allows you to drag the file types-and-drop 3D, such as .OBJ, USD and .GLTF files, into the app; application to convert and view files in USDZ format.
