What is a USD File Type?
Pixar has developed the USD format to better support their 3D graphical pipeline for their animations. One of the main characteristics of the format is its interchangeability, which allows the different 3D applications used in the 3D pipeline of Pixar to define, d' pack, d' assemble and d' edit 3D data in USD format.
Its support for collaboration is another key feature. This involves different layers in the format that are separate files that different collaborating artists can not work destructively individually and combine together to form a single scene.
