What is a VMAP File Type?

Usually VMAP files are only seen by DOTA 2 players who want to modify playable cards. The VMAP files were introduced with the Source 2 engine and replaced the .VMF files, which are used for games with the Source 1 engine. VMAP files are used most often by DOTA 2 but can also be used for d' other games using the Source 2 engine.

You can create and modify VMAP files with the Valve Hammer editor, which is included in the Source SDK and DOTA 2 Workshop Tools. Once you have finished editing a VMAP file, it must be compiled into a compiled map (VMAP _ C) that is packaged in a .VPK file. Select File → Build Map choose your settings, and click Build to compile the VMAP file.
