What is a DOTM File Type?
DOTM files are similar to .DOTX files, which are also created by Word. Both are used to store templates that are useful for creating multiple documents with the same basic formatting and macros. DOTM files, however, are used to save macros, which are a series of commands that are grouped into one command to automatically perform a task. It saves you time on operations that you perform repetitively, such as data entry or calculation.
You can save replayable Word macros to complete a task and assign them to a Word button or type them on the keyboard, which allows you to easily execute the series of steps. To save a macro select View → Macros → Record Macro.
