What is a COOT File Type?
Coot is a type of malware used by cybercriminals that hijacks your files and forces you to pay the author to unlock your files. It can be introduced into your computer by false downloads of software or by attachments to malicious e-mails disguised as d' other types of files. Some of the files used to distribute Coot Malware are .EXE, .RAR, .ZIP and .JS files.
When the software runs on your computer, it encrypts and renames the standard files that are important to you with a .coot extension. It usually consists of documents, images, videos and backup files, such as .DOCX, .GIF and .DB files. For example, an example.xlsx becomes an example.xlsx.coot.
The virus generates a .TXT (_ readme.txt) ransom note in each folder that contains encrypted COOT files. The purpose of the ransom is to inform you of the takeover and what you need to do to get your files back. The note typically provides an e@-@mail address to contact and the amount of ransom that must be paid (usually $980 in bitcoin) to acquire the e' decryption tool.
There are several options to remove the Coot virus, such as the Malwarebytes Premium software, but there is no program to effectively restore your infected files. If you have a recent backup, you can restore the system to remove the virus, but any changes made to the files after the backup will be lost.
