What is a COM File Type?
Most Windows users will not find COM files since these are mainly used in MS-DOS. You can, however, purchase an old COM file that stores a program or commands that must be executed on Windows.
You can run a COM file in the 32-bit version of Windows but you will be prompted to install the NT Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) when you launch the file for the first time. You can also run a COM file in 64-bit with a virtual machine that supports l' environment MS-DOS.
If a directory contains both EXE and COM files with the same filename (e.g. run.exe and run.com), l' command prompt DOS or Windows will launch COM if you type the filename without l' extension.
What is a Default COM File Name?
COMMAND.COM - The Windows shell used by DOS and Windows 95, 98, and Me. In later versions of Windows it has been replaced by cmd.exe.
How to Open COM File?
While COM usually stores MS-DOS or Windows, it can also be used to distribute and execute malicious software attacks on victims. Double-click on a COM file that you have downloaded, received or found on your computer unless you trust the source of the file to protect you from malicious attacks.
