What is a 3MF File Type?
The 3MF format was created in 2015 by the 3MF Consortium to provide a more streamlined 3D printing process. It is intended to be the only format used from conception to manufacture replacing .STL, .OBJ, .AMF, .VRML and d' other 3D formats to reduce problems d' interoperability.
A 3D model file always contains a description of one or more 3D objects. The 3D model can also include text information for each 3D object and a ticket that contains the recommended printing options. The 3MF file may contain a miniature .JPG or .PNG image, digital signatures, core properties and other metadata.
Created by Microsoft in 2015, the 3MF Consortium consists of Autodesk, HP, Microsoft, GE Global Research, Fit AG, Shapeways, SLM Solutions Group, Ultimaker, Stratasys, Siemens PLM Software and Dassault Systemes.
