What is a WEBP File Type?
The WebP is based on technology developed by On2 Technologies, which was acquired by Google in 2009. This includes a container based on the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) and was introduced in 2010.
Since 2019, most web browsers support WEBP files, with the exception of Apple Safari and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
If you find a WEBP file you can view it with Chrome, Firefox, Opera or Microsoft Edge. Many graphical editors can save and open WebP files, such as Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, Image Magick and IrfanView.
Microsoft Photos may not recognize files with pictures with a .webp " extension. However, it may be possible to open a file with Microsoft Photos by changing the apos; extension of the file to ." .jpg. This does not change the internal formatting of the file, but allows Photos to recognize it as an image file.
