What is a HVE File Type?
Unless you are browsing Windows system folders that contain registry files, you probably won't encounter any HVE files. These HVE files are referenced by the Windows Registry and are not intended to be opened or modified. If a user moves, deletes or modifies HVE files used by the registry, it can cause malfunction of the applications or of the whole system.
The most common file is Amcache.hve, which replaced the recentFileCache.bcf file with the Windows 8 release. The HVE file contains information about programs that have recently been run on Windows accessing external storage devices, and includes the d'path; full execution of the program and the date it was created and changed. The Amcache.hve file is located in the following location:
Windows\ appcompat\ Programs.
Windows Registry is a database used to collect and store configuration information for components, such as programs and hardware installed in Windows.
