What is a F4M File Type?
Adobe HDS is used to provide multi-bitrate audio and video content on HTTP to media players that stream the content. The F4M format has been developed to support HDS by providing complex media that can contain multiple audio tracks, multi-band renditions, or advanced content protection to the media players.
Although the original F4M format was developed to support the HDS, it is now extended to other transportation systems, such as RTMP and RTMFP. The F4M manifest contains information about the resolution, codec, and availability of multi-bitrate files.
F4M files are created by File Packager, which is used to package content in Windows and Linux. It is available in the rootinstall / tools / f4fpackager folder of Flash Media Server. When packaging a broadcast media (File Packager supports only .F4V, .MP4 and .FLV files), the content is packaged in files of .F4F fragments. The F4M file is also created with the F4X index files to accompany the F4F files. Once it is packaged, it is delivered by Adobe Media Server to client computers that stream the content.
