Google Loses Top Domain Spot To TikTok

TikTok has surpassed Google as the most popular domain globally, according to Cloudflare's annual rankings.

According to rankings from web security company Cloudflare, Google is no longer the world’s most popular domain, having been dethroned by TikTok.

Cloudflare’s Year in Review report includes a list of the most popular domains, which represent domains that gained the most traffic from one year to the next.

Google.com, which includes Maps, Translate, and News, among other services, finished the previous year as the leader in Cloudflare’s rankings.

TikTok was 7th in the rankings at the time.

TikTok.com is now on track to overtake Google, Facebook, Amazon, and other world-leading domains by the end of 2021.

The following is the complete list of the top ten most popular domains as of late 2021:

  1. TikTok.com
  2. Google.com
  3. Facebook.com
  4. Microsoft.com
  5. Apple.com
  6. Amazon.com
  7. Netflix.com
  8. YouTube.com
  9. Twitter.com
  10. WhatsApp.com

TikTok’s journey to becoming the most popular domain in 2021 is described by Cloudflare as follows:

“It was on February 17, 2021, that TikTok got the top spot for a day. Back in March, TikTok got a few more days and also in May, but it was after August 10, 2021, that TikTok took the lead on most days. There were some days when Google was #1, but October and November were mostly TikTok’s days, including on Thanksgiving (November 25) and Black Friday (November 26).”

Lists of the most popular social media domains, e-commerce platforms, and video streaming sites are also included in Cloudflare’s report.

To no surprise, Amazon was the most popular e-commerce domain at the end of the year, followed by Taobao, eBay, and Walmart.

Giants like Netflix, YouTube, and HBOMax dominated the list of most popular video streaming sites. Surprisingly, Twitch did not make the top ten.

Putting These Rankings in Their Proper Context

Is this a sign that TikTok has surpassed Facebook as the most popular social media platform?

No, it has a long way to go before it reaches those heights.

According to Cloudflare, this means TikTok.com received more traffic than any other domain.

This does not imply that TikTok has more users than Google or other social media platforms.

According to Insider Intelligence (formerly eMarketer), TikTok has surpassed Snapchat and Twitter in global user numbers while trailing Facebook and Instagram.

In other words, TikTok is the world’s third-largest social media platform.

The number of global TikTok users increased by 59.8 percent in 2020 and will increase by an additional 40.8 percent in 2021.

Furthermore, Insider Intelligence predicts that TikTok’s global user base will grow by 15.1% in 2022.

If that estimate is correct, TikTok will have a 20% share of all social media users by the end of next year.

If TikTok isn’t already a part of your social media marketing strategy for 2022, these figures should convince you that it should be.
